The Victorian World:
South America

With the exception of the first five articles on this list, every article on South America is from an American publication. This suggests that while Americans certainly went abroad and visited Europe, Europeans (i.e., British Victorians) rarely traveled in the opposite direction to visit South America. It's also clear that even for American travelers, South America was not really considered a tourism destination. Journeys to the southern latitudes were more in the way of explorations and expeditions, even when visiting major cities like Rio de Janeiro. And this seems to have not changed greatly even today...
