How to Survive in Victorian Britain

I'm delighted to announce the publication of my new book, How to Survive in Victorian Britain, released in 2026 from Pen & Sword Books. This is part of Pen & Sword's ongoing "How to Survive" series, which takes readers to a host of historical destinations, including ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, Medieval Britain, Anglo-Saxon Britain, Georgian Britain, and more. (For the full list, visit Pen & Sword Books.)

Imagine for a moment that you could time-travel back to the 19th century, and experience what it has to offer - the good and the bad. How would you cope? This is a world with no fast foods, no instant anything, very little in the way of "passive entertainment," no credit cards, and for a great deal of the century, no electricity. Many portray it as a horrendous time, especially for women - and yet it was an era in which women made amazing advances in nearly every area of civil rights. It was truly the foundation of our own age, and an era that considered itself more modern, educated, and enlightened than any that had come before (and with very valid reasons for thinking so). We think of our age as being one of rapid technological development and change - but the same was true in the Victorian era, which saw more changes in a few decades than had occurred over centuries previously.

In How to Survive in Victorian Britain, I'll guide you through the many things you'd need to know in order to...

  • Manage your home, cook on a Victorian stove, heat water, keep your clothes clean, light the house, keep the coal fires burning... plus what a Victorian loo might look like...

  • Manage the servants and understand their duties (and their legal rights)...

  • Learn what to eat, where you can find it, why seasons matter, how to prepare it... plus dangerous adulterations to watch out for...

  • Choose what to wear, whether you can afford the latest fashions or (more likely) just three or four gowns for the year...
  • Entertain yourself in a world without television, radio, or cellphones...

  • Entertain your friends with a host of amusing parlor games, or the (distantly) next best thing to television: the magic lantern show...

  • Celebrate Christmas, New Year's, Valentine's Day, Easter, and more... (Perhaps you'd like an artificial tin tree? Or to give someone an expensive Easter gift inside a decorated ostrich egg?)

  • Keep yourself healthy in a world filled with diseases we've all but forgotten... but stay away from some of the remedies in that Victorian medicine chest!

  • Handle the ever-present issues of death and dying (though, if you've survived this long, there's a good chance you'll reach a ripe old age!)
