The Victorian World:
"The Holy Land"

Home > The Victorian World > The Middle East > "The Holy Land"

It may not be politically correct today to refer to various Eastern lands as "The Holy Land," but this is how the Victorians viewed them. Many articles were written to show Christian Victorians what "Bible Lands" looked like in the 19th century. Travel to such countries was complicated, however, and involved a degree of "roughing it" that most Victorian travelers didn't aspire too - so a visit to such countries was definitely an adventure. Bear in mind that Victorian views of other cultures - especially non-European cultures -- are rarely "politically correct!" Keep in mind as well that names and boundaries of many countries and cities have changed since these articles were written.
