Victorian Health & Beauty:
Seasonal Health Issues

Home > Victorian Health & Beauty > Healthy Living > Seasonal Health Issues

Every season brought its own health issues in Victorian times. Winter was the worst culprit. Outdoors, the world was cold and damp, with winds that would bring a chill through the warmest clothing. Indoors, one was at risk of spending too much time in poorly ventilated rooms, exposed to the smoke of coal or wood fires. Summer, on the other hand, could bring excessive heat, which could be particularly hazardous to a Victorian lady swathed in layers of petticoats and cramped into a corset. Spring and autumn had their hazards as well. This section looks at some of the ailments associated with the seasons, and ways to prevent or resolve them.
