Victorian Fashion:
Accessories & Hairdressing

Home > Victorian Fashion > Accessories & Hairdressing

Victorian gowns were works of art - but accessories provided the finishing touches! One could hardly be truly fashionable without the right hat, for instance. Many occasions called for the use of a fan, and in cold weather a lady always carried a muff to keep her hands warm. Here's a look at some of the odds and ends that make a Victorian costume truly complete!

Hats & Bonnets

Hats and Bonnets of the 19th Century, by Sophia F.A. Caulfeild (Girl's Own Paper, 1880)
"The extraordinary freaks of fashion in olden times scarcely exceed the absurdities into which we have been led since the first development of a bonnet out of the hat..."

Caps, by B.C. Saward (Girl's Own Paper, 1892)
An illustrated look at fashionable headwear for old and young, upstairs and downstairs.

Hairdressing

Flowing or Short Hair for Ladies? (Godey's, 1860)
An editorial on whether women should cut their hair according to the latest fashion, or wear it long and flowing (rather than long and bound up).

Some Suggestions About the Hair, by Isabel A. Mallon (Ladies' Home Journal, 1892)

The Magic of Hairdressing, by Florence Burnley and Kathleen Schlesinger (The Strand, 1900A)
This is more about "bizarre oddities" of hairdressing than magic!

Jewelry

The Watch, and How to Use It (Leisure Hour, 1860)
It's hard to imagine that, when this article was written, watches had only been available for about 200 years!

When to Wear Diamonds, by Florence Marryat (Ladies' Home Journal, 1892)

Footwear

Heavy Shoes for the Ladies (Godey's, 1867)

A Propos de Bottes (Girl's Own Paper, 1892)

Fans

Japanese Fans, by James Mason (Cassell's Family Magazine, 1877)
In 1875, Japan exported new fewer than 3 million fans around the world; here's a look at their design and manufacture.

The Fans of Past and Present, by Dora de Blaquière (Cassell's Family Magazine, 1878)
A look at fans from around the world, including tips on how to paint fans.

About Fans, by Major L. Hamel (Demorest, 1879)
