Victorian Arts & Crafts:
Quilting

Home > Victorian Arts, Crafts & Needlework > Embroidery > Quilting

Quilting seems such a traditionally American craft that many don't realize it was very popular in Victorian Britain as well. Victorian quilts are true works of art. Yet despite the popularity of this type of needlework, it seems to have gotten little coverage in the women's magazines of the day.

Fancy Work: Patterns for Patchwork (Demorest, 1873)

Patchwork, by Dora de Blaquière (Girl's Own Paper, 1880)

A Chat About Quilts, by Mary Laybourn (Girl's Own Paper, 1882)

Crazy Patchwork, by Natalie Sturges (Ingalls' Home Magazine, 1889)

A Very Pretty and Inexpensive Quilt (Girl's Own Paper, 1889)

Patchwork Past and Present, by M.D. Eastwood (Cassell's Family Magazine, 1890)

A Warm Quilt, by "Cousin Lil" (Girl's Own Paper, 1898)
