Victorian Britain:
The Islands of Britain

Home > Victorian Britain > Places & Travel Destinations > The Islands of Britain

The islands listed in this section are distinct from other islands that one may find scattered along the coast of England and Scotland in that while they may be considered part of "The British Isles," most possess a certain degree of independence and self-government. The Isle of Man, for instance, is a self-governing British Crown dependency. The Channel Islands are a mixed bag, including some that belong to France and some that are British dependencies, and some that aren't generally listed among the "Channel Islands" at all. Heligoland isn't even in British waters; it's in the North Sea, but was governed by Britain from 1807 to 1890. The Isles of Scilly are the only group that are directly governed by Britain; they were once a part of Cornwall, but are now an independent authority.
