Victorian & Historic Architecture:
Architectural Studies

Home > Victorian & Historic Architecture > Architectural Studies

Here's a look at some general articles, series and studies of architecture, ranging from ancient times to the "present day." Several of these articles are loaded with fantastic illustrations.

On the Geometrical Period of Gothic Architecture, by E. Sharpe, MA (Archaeological Journal, 1852)

The "Queen Anne" Styles, by J.Q. Throckmorton (Peterson's, 1883)

Architectural Museum, Brompton (Gentleman's Magazine, 1859)
A description of 15th-century manorhouses.

The Earliest Gothic Buildings (Gentleman's Magazine, 1859)
The architecture of the Hospital of St. John at Angers, one of the oldest illustrations of French hospital architecture.

Gothic Architecture, by John J. Stevenson (Harper's Monthly, 1876A)

The Poetry of Steeples (Harper's Monthly, 1876A)

Architecture; Or, The Art and History of Buildings, by H.W. Brewer (Girl's Own Paper, 1886)
This well-illustrated 8-part series covers ancient and Egyptian architecture; Greek architecture; and European architecture (with an emphasis on cathedrals) from the 14th century through the "present time."

The Story of the Dwelling House, by Edwin Goadby (Cassell's Family Magazine, 1890)

The Largest Churches in Europe, by H.W. Brewer (Girl's Own Paper, 1891)
Interesting comparison of major European cathedrals. (Unfortunately the illustrative print was missing.)

The Loftiest Churches in Europe, by H.W. Brewer (Girl's Own Paper, 1892)
Another comparison of the churches of Europe.

Old English Cottage Homes, by H.W. Brewer (Girl's Own Paper, 1899)
Subtitled "Village Architecture of Bygone Times," this is indeed more of a roundup of general village architecture - including inns, town halls, etc. - than specifically about cottages.

Which is the Finest Building in the World? by Frederick Dolman (The Strand, 1900B)
Leading architects offer their opinions.

Site, Base, Support and Superstructure, by H.W. Brewer (Girl's Own Paper, 1901)
Subtitled "A Contrast Between Ancient and Modern Methods of Building," this is an interesting 12-part overview of building styles, along with a lively discussion of what makes some buildings magnificent and some not so magnificent. An American "tall house" is included, along with a "modern German castle" that illustrates "every defect a castle can possibly possess." Loads of illustrations.
