Victorian America: States & Regions
Quick, how many states did America have in the Victorian era? The answer, of course, is "it depends"! In 1860, just prior to the Civil War, there were 33 states. By 1890, there were 42. At the turn of the century, there were 45 - the next state (Oklahoma) wasn't added until 1907. To keep confusion to a minimum, we've tried to list articles under the state that would eventually exist - even if, at the time, the location (e.g., Alaska or "The Dakotas") had not yet achieved statehood.

This section looks at everything to do with individual states within America, including the territory of Alaska. If it relates to a state, you'll find it here, whether it's travel, history, a look at a specific town or city, cultural events and festivals, curiosities, etc. Several states have so many articles that they've earned their own page or pages!

• See Regional Life & Cross-Country Travel for larger areas of the US, such as "The Southwest" or "The Rockies," and articles on cross-country travel.

• See Territories & Protectorates for information on Porto Rico, Samoa and the Philippines.

• See the Civil War section for articles on engagements in specific states and towns.
