People of Other Lands

While Europe might be visited by the "average" Victorian tourist, the rest of the world was accessible only to the more adventurous traveler or explorer. Of the Middle East, only Egypt really offered facilities for the tourist; exploring further meant setting up an expedition into often hostile territories. This collection brings you a look at the people of these more distant, exotic corners of the earth - Asia or "The Orient", the Middle East, North and South America, Africa, India, and the "colonies." (Even Canada was regarded as a wild, inhospitable place - the last bastion of the "western frontier".) Many of these images were recorded by intrepid explorers, offering us a rare, real-life glimpse of the "exotic" peoples of the 19th-century world!

This collection is available as part of our Victorian People of the World package.
