The Victorian World: British Colonies & Dependencies

Britain's various colonies and dependencies did not appear to be terribly fashionable travel destinations. Europe was far more civilized; the East (particularly Egypt) far more en vogue. Articles about the colonies often come across as providing intriguing details on remote, rustic locales that one might prefer to read about than to visit.

AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND

The Colonies and Dependencies of Great Britain: Australia & New Zealand, by Emma Brewer (GOP 1883)
From Aden to Sydney, by W. Lawrence Liston (GOP 1891)
A "voyage for health" to Australia.
The "Girls Own" Tour of the Colonies: New Zealand, by Emma Brewer (GOP 1886)
The "Girls Own" Tour of the Colonies: Tasmania, by Emma Brewer (GOP 1886)
On Emigrating as Domestic Servants to New Zealand (GOP 1885)

CANADA

The Colonies and Dependencies of Great Britain: Dominion of Canada, by Emma Brewer (GOP 1883)
Mary Aylmer, or, Ranch Life in British Columbia (GOP 1890)
A fictional account of life in British Columbia.
Some Sketches of Farm Life in Manitoba (GOP 1902)
Summer in Muskoka, the Free Grant District of Canada, by Julia Lawrason (GOP 1882)

INDIA

A Day in the "Rains" in Assam (GOP 1891)
Kalimpong: A Girl's Ride into British Butan (GOP 1896)
Possibly by the same author as the "tiger" piece; in this case our heroine faces a serious crisis, in that the ponies were all furnished with men's saddles!!!
My Tiger: A Girl's Story of India, by Ascott Hope (GOP 1894)
It's not quite clear whether this is fiction or an actual experience.

OTHER

An English Girl in South Africa (GOP 1900)
The Colonies and Dependencies of Great Britain: Newfoundland, by Emma Brewer (GOP 1883)
The start of a "virtual tour" of Britain's colonies.
The Colonies and Dependencies of Great Britain: The West Indies, Central and South Africa, by Emma Brewer (GOP 1883)
The Colonies and Dependencies of Great Britain: Barbadoes & St. Lucia, by Emma Brewer (GOP 1883)
Girl Volunteers for South Africa (GOP 1902)
"Over three thousand British girls have volunteered to go out to South Africa to teach the little Boer children how to read, write, and spell and do their sums, and sing." Actually only 100 girls were requested, and this article spells out what they could expect in terms of working and living conditions.
Life in the Colonies, by Adelaide Ross (GOP 1891)
