Travel & World Cultures: The World Through Victorian Eyes

Victorians are not noted for political correctness. Rather, they are noted for a profound sense of superiority (held by every class) over the rest of the world. Other cultures were "foreign" -- sometimes quaint, sometimes bizarre, but unquestionably different, and therefore (in most eyes) inferior. However, one does see this attitude shift over time to a greater degree of acceptance and even open-minded interest in the differences between cultures. And even in the earlier years of period, there are always exceptions to the "we're better than them" attitude.

Readers of this section, be warned, however: again, there's no such thing as political correctness in Victorian articles. Morever, there is, quite often, much that may cause offense. These articles provide the reader with an unvarnished look at historical attitudes toward other cultures and races, and are offered for their historical value.
