Arts & Crafts

To say that arts and crafts were a huge part of Victorian life -- or, at least, the life of the leisure classes -- is a vast understatement. Young ladies were expected to be proficient with the needle, and were also encouraged to knit and crochet on behalf of the less fortunate. They also engaged in many other activities, such as pottery, china painting, woodwork, metalwork and engraving, and other "forgotten" crafts like "crayonium" and "vitrelac." In a time with no television, radio or movies, when young ladies of breeding rarely engaged in paid employment, it's small wonder that crafts flourished and magazines struggled to keep up with the demand for new patterns and techniques!
