Victorian and Historic Architecture

Victorians greatly admired the architecture of their predecessors, as these beautifully illustrated articles and series demonstrate...

ARCHITECTURE IN GENERAL

Architecture; Or, The Art and History of Buildings, by H.W. Brewer (GOP 1886)
This well-illustrated 8-part series covers ancient and Egyptian architecture; Greek architecture; and European architecture (with an emphasis on cathedrals) from the 14th century through the "present time."

Old English Cottage Homes; Or, Village Architecture of Bygone Times, by H.W. Brewer (GOP 1899)
It's interesting to see what was considered a "cottage" in the 1890's! Actually, this is more of a roundup of "village architecture," including town halls, inns, etc.

Site, Base, Support and Superstructure: A Contrast Between Ancient and Modern Methods of Building, by H.W. Brewer (GOP 1900)
Despite the rather dry title, this is an interesting 12-part overview of building styles, along with a lively discussion of what makes some buildings magnificent and some not so magnificent. An American "tall house" is included, along with a "modern German castle" that illustrates "every defect a castle can possibly possess." Loads of illustrations.

CASTLES

English Castles: Milestones of England's History, by Emma Brewer (GOP 1888)
This lovely series covers Norwich Castle, Castle Rising, Corfe Castle and Durham Castle, with loads of great illustrations.

CHURCHES & CATHEDRALS

Interesting Monuments of Distinguished Women, by H.W. Brewer (GOP 1889, 1892, 1893, 1894)
Queen Eleanor (Westminster Abbey); Lady Idonea (Beverly Minster); Jane Wren (wife of Christopher Wren; St. Paul's Cathedral); Countess Aveline, Last Queen of the Isle of Wight (Westminster); Queen Elizabeth (Westminster); Two Baby Daughters of James I (Westminster). Gorgeous illustrations and a capsule history of each distinguished lady.

The Largest Churches in Europe, by H.W. Brewer (GOP 1891)
Interesting comparison of major European cathedrals. (Unfortunately the illustrative print was missing.)

The Loftiest Churches in Europe, by H.W. Brewer (GOP 1892)
Another comparison of the churches of Europe; click here for the illustration.

St. Martin's Church, Canterbury (GOP 1886)
A nice feature on the oldest church in Canterbury.

Typical Church Towers of English Counties, by H.W. Brewer (GOP 1898, 1901)
A series of short features on British county churches, with excellent pictures.
