Noteworthy Americans

Not a great many notable Americans were profiled in British Victorian publications, but this section will expand considerably once I start on my cache of American magazines such as Harpers and Century!

Van Bibber, Mrs. - A Brave Woman by Dora de Blaquière (GOP 1881)
Mrs. Van Bibber of West Virginia.
Bickerdyke, Mary - Mother Bickerdyke, by Phyllis Browne (GOP 1890)
Union army nurse Mary Bickerdyke.
Bridgman, Laura - In Darkness and Silence (GOP 1890)
Laura Bridgman, an American woman who was deaf, dumb, and blind.
Garfield, Mrs. - President Garfield's Mother (GOP 1881)
Jubilee Singers - The Jubilee Singers at Grosvenor House, by Anne Beale (GOP 1885)
The Jubilee Singers were a Negro gospel group that began in Nashville with the purpose of raising funds to establish a university. This event was the latest of several successful tours in England and Europe; on this occasion the singers were supporting the jubilee of the Princess Louise Home (see the Poverty & Charity section).
Ossoli, Margaret Fuller - Margaret Fuller Ossoli by J.E. Runtz Rees (GOP 1880)
An American writer who died at sea in 1850.
